I had the opportunity to ask Janella Angeles a few questions about her debut novel, Where Dreams Descend. If you haven’t heard of the book, you can check the book out on Goodreads here and read my 5-star review here.
In a city covered in ice and ruin, a group of magicians face off in a daring game of magical feats to find the next headliner of the Conquering Circus, only to find themselves under the threat of an unseen danger striking behind the scenes.
As each act becomes more and more risky and the number of missing magicians piles up, three are forced to reckon with their secrets before the darkness comes for them next.
The Star: Kallia, a powerful showgirl out to prove she’s the best no matter the cost
The Master: Jack, the enigmatic keeper of the club, and more than one lie told
The Magician: Demarco, the brooding judge with a dark past he can no longer hide.
- When choosing the suits for the families, what made you decide to veer from the traditional playing card ones?
This was a pretty natural choice for me! For me, if I’d kept the traditional hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs it would’ve felt too much like trying to fit a real world staple in this second world fantasy. Changing up the symbols and giving them their own meanings was fun, and really gives an added layer of detail to the world!
- What do our main characters desire most?
Kallia desires fame and glory. Daron desires answers to questions he’s had for so long. And Jack…well, Jack’s desires are still a mystery to us all.
- What was your favorite snack and drink while writing this book?
I don’t often snack while I write (I’m so embarrassingly messy and hate having to wipe my fingers every two seconds), but I do always start off with a cup of coffee if I’m writing in the morning and drink lots and lots of water all throughout the day.
This book was truly amazing, and I am sure Angeles has many rich, unique plans for the rest of the series. I definitely recommend Where Dreams Descend to anyone who needs a little magic in their life!
I also want to close by giving a huge Thank You to Wednesday Books for asking me to participate in this blog tour.
